If you’ve ever thought you need a huge social media following, to improve your sales – it is simply not true.

A small business owner had contacted our team for social media management and social media marketing services. While we were performing an audit of their social media pages, we realized that over 8k out of their 10k followers are inorganic. This means that over 8k of their ‘followers’ are bots. For people who do not know what follower bots are, they are social media accounts that aren’t run by humans. They are automated, and usually created for various malicious purposes, such as spamming users, inflating follower counts, etc.

Huge social media following is nice, but it has no direct impact on your sales

What had happened was: one of the promises their previous social media manager had made, was that they were going to increase their social media followership drastically. And they did – So much that within a period of 3 months, the social media accounts media manager had devised means to accumulate bot followers to reach their targets. Within three months, they had gone from having around 1,400 followers, into having 10,500 followers on each platform. ‘Great!’ They must have thought. When in fact, it is not great at all, as it made their business suffer needless setbacks.

So, if you have been considering getting bot-following to up your social media following, here are a few reasons to abort mission:

  1. Lack of Engagement – Fake followers don’t interact with your content, which lowers your engagement rate. Social media algorithms prioritize engagement, so your posts may not reach real potential customers. Bad reach is bad for sales.
  2. Platform Penalties – Social media platforms regularly remove fake accounts, meaning your follower count could drop suddenly. Some platforms may even penalize your account.
  3. Wasted Marketing Efforts – You may invest  time and money creating content aimed at an audience that doesn’t exist, reducing the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.
  4. Skewed Analytics – Fake followers distort your insights, making it harder to measure what real customers like and engage with.

Building an organic following, who engage with your content may take time, but it leads to real relationships and long-term business growth. And as it is with anything  real, building a real relationship with your followers (no matter their volume) is worth investing in.
